Bringing more carbon-free, renewable power to Oregon
In 2016, PGE joined a broad coalition of customer groups and other advocates to develop and support the Oregon Clean Electricity and Coal Transition Plan, which was passed into law by the Oregon Legislative Assembly. The new law doubled Oregon’s renewable energy standard, requiring PGE to serve 50 percent of its customers’ energy needs from qualifying renewable power resources by 2040, and set a firm timeline for coal-fired generation to be eliminated from the company’s resource mix.
Now, we’re working to implement the law, while at the same time exploring and implementing other strategies to reduce our carbon footprint and assure our customers’ supply of clean, affordable, reliable, safe and secure electricity for years to come.
A significant step in that effort will be the acquisition of an additional 100 average megawatts of new renewable resources, as called for in our 2016 integrated resource plan. The Oregon Public Utility Commission (OPUC) acknowledged this plan in 2017.
This year, we’re kicking off a competitive bidding process to identify the most cost effective renewable resources available to meet this need. More information about this process is provided below.
2018 Renewable RFP
PGE’s 2018 Renewable Request For Proposals (2018 R-RFP) seeks to procure 100 average megawatts of qualifying renewable energy resources. The timing and the volume of this resource procurement is consistent with PGE’s 2016 Integrated Resource Plan Addendum and the guidance provided by the OPUC through the 2016 IRP Addendum Acknowledgement Order No. 18-044.
The OPUC has hired an independent evaluator (IE) to monitor PGE’s procurement process. As memorialized in Order No. 17-226, the commission has selected Bates White to act serve as IE. Bates White will host the 2018 R-RFP procurement website where bidders and stakeholders may ask questions of PGE regarding the RFP. Bidders will also be asked to submit bids within the procurement website. Please visit PortlandGeneralRFP2018.com.
